Facebook with announced has released an app called Lasso. This app allows users to create fun, short videos designed in competition to TikTok. TikTok is viral 15-second video app that recently merged with Musical.ly. Lasso is Facebook’s latest bid to win over teens, which the large social media platform has lost its hold over.

Lasso is owned by Facebook, it integrates into the company’s ecosystem so you can sign in using an Instagram or Facebook account (or create one if you’ve managed to avoid the platform for this long). The app will need to access your profile page, photos and videos.

The Story

Facebook explains Lasso as an app that “makes it easy for anyone to create and share short videos with fun effects.” The app will allow users to follow other creators, search for content using hashtags and create new, short videos using a suite of creative tools. Facebook makes sure to note that the app includes a “massive music library,” which leverages it to take a shot at TikTok, an app that has gained popularity with lip sync videos.

On Lasso, users can record themselves dancing and lip-syncing to music, similar to what they can already do on TikTok. The app also lets people to record short clips like Vines. The new app by Facebook is available on iOS and android. “Lasso is a new standalone app for short-form, entertaining videos — from comedy to beauty to fitness and more. We’re excited about the potential here, and we’ll be gathering feedback from people and creators.

Lasso lets the users to shoot up to 15-second long videos but you can’t upload and overlay popular songs. The app centers on an algorithmic feed of recommended videos, but also lets you tap through hashtags or a Browse page of themed collections.
