This sounds really extravagant, with the technology improvement in the processor of the smartphones to make them work faster. On the same side, technology is also working on to have larger smartphones cameras. As extravagant as 48 megapixels sound, it actually makes a lot of sense. Because Huawei’s new Mate 20 Pro has a 40-megapixel main camera.

On the other hand, Sony and Samsung both has already unveiled their planned about launching 48-megapixel image sensors designed for smartphones cameras. While, Honor has just pre-announced the View 20, same “hole-punch” selfie camera design as Huawei’s upcoming Nova 4, is coming

The Development

Since Sony launched its 48-megapixel IMX586 image sensor for smartphones in July. Whereas, Samsung also has a 48-megapixel sensor called ISOCELL Bright GM1. Meanwhile, Xiaomi is also set to release a 48-megapixel phone in the coming months. Lin Bin, the company’s co-founder and president, posted a picture of an unidentified device with caption “48MP camera” beside the lens. According to him the phone is coming in January next year.

Honor has just pre-announced the View 20, which uses Sony’s IMX586 sensor with Huawei’s Kirin 980 processor. With the competition heating up, both Samsung and Sony are making similar announcements about their sensors: they have tiny 0.8µm pixels. But the sensors themselves are physically larger than most competitors at an overall size of 1/2.0 inches. According to them every individual pixel used the information from the other pixel to produce the equivalent of a 12-megapixel image captured with 1.6µm pixels. While, best smartphones like the Pixel 3 and iPhone XS have 12-megapixel sensors with 1.4µm pixels.
