Stratolaunch is one airplane of its kind and took 8 years to complete.It is making some history even as it scales back its ambitions.
Now the company has successfully flown the world’s largest aircraft, the Scaled Composites Stratolaunch, for the first time. It’s like a two planes joint together.
Stratolaunch
The dual-fuselage rocket hauler took off from the Mojave Air and Space Port, US and completed a roughly 2.5-hour journey. During its first flight the plane reached the maximum altitude of 17,000 feet. It wasn’t carrying a payload, but its trip is still a big deal for a machine that was first announced eight years ago and boasts an unprecedented 385-foot wingspan.
The airplane with a wing span of 117 meters weighs 220 tons, has two connected fuselages and 28 wheels, and is powered by six Boeing 747 engines. On the other hand, the plane is there to reduce the costs of spaceflight by ferrying rockets to an altitude of 35,000 feet. Thus it makes it easier to complete the journey into orbit.
During the Stratolaunch flight, the plane reached a maximum speed of 189 mph (304 km/h). While it carries out a series of exercises to evaluate aircraft performance. These included speed and flight control tests, like roll doublets, yawing maneuvers, pushovers and pull-ups, and steady heading side slips.
