Sony Corporation claimed that their upcoming PS5 will be the “world’s fastest gaming console.” This claim was made at a job listing for a Senior Cloud Engineering Manager at Sony Interactive Entertainment. This claim put a question mark on the currently leading generation of consoles with the Xbox One X seen as winning out on smooth processing power over the PS4 Pro.
The listing states that the potential candidate will be serving “to build next-generation cloud infrastructure”, and “will also be one of the heads of an elite unit that is much eager to launch the upcoming world’s fastest console (PS5) in 2020.”
PS5 World’s Fastest Console
The Race
Both of the much-awaited devices, Xbox Scarlett and PS5 are ready to launch in the same end-of-2020, the topic of which console stands out on power and speed will be great – with faster consoles ready to overcome the long loading screens, perform extra in-game assets, decrease delay during multiplayer, and make for a softer and more conscious gaming experience whether you’re playing huge open-world games (Cyberpunk 2077) or fast-paced online shooters (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare).
The performance of both next-gen consoles will surely be a jump from what gamers today are used to, and little variations in speed may not be as significant to some as, say, particular games or support for peripherals like VR headsets – with Sony leading the race from both aspects.
But if the PS5 actually can claim to be one of the “world’s fastest consoles“, it may take over the greatest power that Xbox currently has in the modern generation of gaming machines.
PS5 Specs
The 8-core AMD chipset based on third-generation Ryzen architecture, with a GPU using the best pieces of the Radeon Navi GPU family; a built-for-purpose SSD storage system; 3D audio; backward compatibility with PS4 games and PSVR hardware; 8K TV support. It’s all been announced by PlayStation expert Mark Cerny, the man behind the development of the PS4, and now in command of the next-gen console’s development.
With 8K TV support extend far more precise characters. The report of the SSD drive will be encouraging just because the games will be growing more complicated, that doesn’t mean they’ll be slower to load too. It’s expected that the current SSD is 19 times faster than regular SSD storage methods (but given the speed difference between the SSD and the optical drive, the installation of games will be compulsory).
Physical games for the PS5 will use 100GB optical disks; included in an optical drive that doubles as a 4K Blu-Ray player and the next-generation hardware will possess a thoroughly revised UI.
PS5 controller
According to Sony, the PS5 will come with its controller. The PS5 controller (official name not yet been revealed) will add haptic feedback to substitute the DualShock 4’s rumble technology. This suggests to enhance the controller’s feedback and hence the player’s attention.
The PS5 controller will also include adaptive triggers that Sony claims have “been consolidated into the trigger buttons (L2/R2)”. These adaptive triggers will enable developers to program the resistance of the triggers to simulate effects more precisely.
Design
The model, if true, all-but reinforces the many leaked rumors and states concerning the PlayStation 5’s hardware design, one that sports an unusual V-shaped cavity and extreme amounts of ventilation.
What does the model reveal to us? There are many buttons: On/Standby, Reset, Eject (for the double layer 100GB-reading Blu-ray drive), System Initialization and Network initialization, all on the front left. There are also many status lights, numbering ‘0’ to ‘7’, which possibly link to CPU cores engaged, but could also be a status light for controllers attached.
To the right, there are 5 USB ports (one USB 2.0 and five likely USB 3.0 ports – the last port being covered by a cable), as well as a USB type B port. A small circle above could well be a camera built into the console, according to initial copyright filings.
What to install?
The PS5 will own more obvious game data due to its SSD; this will enable players to have more authority over installing and uninstalling games rather than managing games as a big chunk of data. PS5 is providing finer-grained access to the data.
This will enable players to install (or delete) only specific sections of a game. So rather than installing the complete game, you could prefer to just install the single-player mode and then do multiplayer later – or vice versa.
The User Interface
The PlayStation 5 is using a brand new user interface. “Multiplayer game servers will present the console with the set of joinable activities in real-time. Single-player games will give knowledge like what missions you could take and what rewards you might get for achieving them—and all of those options will be visible in the UI. As a player, you just jump right into whatever you like.
Physical discs
Physical games for the PS5 will use 100GB optical disks, included in an optical drive that doubles as a 4K Blu-Ray player.
Release Date
Sony has officially confirmed the PS5 will release “Holiday 2020”, aka between October and December 2020. This will place the PlayStation 5 in close competition with Xbox Project Scarlett, which is expected to be released during the same season.
