Mercedes-Benz introduced its best model at the 2019 New York Auto Show. The biggest introduction in terms of mass and volume is the second-generation new 2020 GLS. It is a seven-seater family-hauler presented as the S-Class of the SUV family. Well the 2020 GLS has everything; it has technology, the luxury, and the wheelbase to back it up. Besides that, it has big touch-screens and tablets, five-zone climate control, a learning-capable AI voice assistant, and electric assist for all engine variants.
The new 2020 GLs lineup includes, GLS 450 and GLS 580. The current model GLS is already just about unspeakably enormous, but Mercedes has decided biggest is best, and extended the new model in all directions.
The new 2020 GLS
The GLS 450 is the more unresponsive of the two models, with its turbo 3.0L inline-six engines. It’s enough to produce 362HP, though those with lead feet should probably splurge on the GLS 580 and its 4.0L twin-turbo V8.
On the other hand, the both versions of the GLS available at launch will sport Mercedes’ 21HP EQ Boost assist system. So, it helps the otherwise-standard combustion engines in these with acceleration. When all is said and done, you can expect the 580 to hit 60 in 5.2 seconds, and the very slightly pokier 450 to do the same in just under 6 seconds. If you’re even considering something like the GLS, though, you’re probably a responsible adult with people in your life you need to ferry around pretty regularly.
On the other hand, the most interesting is a brand new GLS 580 4MATIC V8 petrol engine making 489 horsepower. It produces 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque, and returning highly impressive combined cycle efficiency figures around 10 l/100 km, or 23.5 mpg.
In both GLS models, owners will be looking at 0-60 mph acceleration in under 6.0 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph. A 9-speed automatic and all-wheel drive are also standard.
The 450 comes with a turbocharged, 3.0-liter straight-six engine that makes 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Step up to the 580 and you’ll get a twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter V8 tuned to develop 483 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. Regardless of how many cylinders are under the hood, a mild hybrid system adds up to 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque under the right conditions.
